U.S. Men's National Team Falls to Brazil, 1-0, in FIFA Confederations Cup

In a Confederations Cup Group B match, Brazil held onto a 1-0 halftime lead to defeat the United States, on the strength of a 13th minute goal by Ronaldinho and a key save by goalkeeper Dida, who stopped Joe-Max Moore's 73rd-minute penalty kick attempt to preserve Brazil's lead. Ronaldinho scored the lone goal of the match when he took a cross from the left wing and headed it into goal beyond the efforts of U.S. 'keeper Kasey Keller. Going into the match, both teams were at the top of the group standings after each winning their first match of the tournament on Saturday. With six points after two matches, Brazil stands alone in first place in the group and is virtually assured of advancing to the semifinals. The top two teams from each group advance.

The U.S. National Soccer Team defeated New Zealand, 2-1, on Saturday to begin play in the tournament. Brazil dismantled Germany, 4-0, also on Saturday. The USA had not faced Brazil since Feb. 10, 1998, when a spectacular American performance led to a 1-0 victory over the world's top-ranked national team. Tonight's U.S. lineup was as follows: Kasey Keller, Jeff Agoos, Carlos Llamosa (Eddie Lewis, 68), Robin Fraser, Frankie Hejduk, Gregg Berhalter, John Harkes (Joe-Max Moore, 58), Cobi Jones, Jovan Kirovski, Ernie Stewart and Brian McBride.
