MUTINY DOWN METROSTARS 1-0
The Mutiny beat the MetroStars 1-0 on a 20th minute goal by Musa Shannon before 23,765 fans at Giants Stadium Sunday afternoon.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Sunday, April 25, 1999) -- Musa Shannon scored a goal in his fourth straight game to give Tampa Bay its first win of the season, as the Mutiny defeated the MetroStars 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Giants Stadium.

Tampa Bay (1-4, 3 points) spoiled the MetroStars' chance to move into first place in the Eastern Conference. The Metros (3-2, 5 points) remain in a tie with Columbus and Miami for third place in the East.

Shannon struck in the 20th minute, taking a through ball from Mauricio Ramos and beating MetroStars goalkeeper Mike Ammann with a low shot inside the right post. Shannon has scored in four consecutive matches, but he made his first start of the season on Sunday. Shannon filled the starting slot previously held by Alejandro Sequeira, who was cut by the Mutiny on Friday to make room on the roster for Carlos Valderrama.

Valderrama was reassigned from the Miami Fusion to the Mutiny on Friday by MLS Commissioner Douglas G. Logan. Fusion Head Coach Ivo Wortmann decided Valderrama did not fit into Miami's playing style and left the legendary Colombian playmaker out of the lineup for the Fusion's 2-1 shootout win over Dallas on April 15.

After missing eight practices in Miami, Valderrama returned to the Mutiny, the team he led to a 37-27 record in Major League Soccer's first two seasons. Valderrama started for Tampa Bay on Sunday, helping create the midfield buildup for Shannon's goal.

The Mutiny improved to 10-4 all-time against the MetroStars, and Tampa Bay has outscored the Metros 28-16 in those games.
