FIFA AND TRAFFIC SIGN TV CONTRACT FOR FIFA CLUB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Zürich, 9 September 1999 - FIFA and the Brazilian television and marketing agency Traffic International met today in Zurich to sign the TV contract for the FIFA Club World Championship, the first edition of which will be held in Brazil on 5-14 January, 2000.

Several companies expressed an interest in handling the exploitation of broadcast rights worldwide, but FIFA concluded that the content of Traffic’s bid identified them as the most suitable partner. The agreement guarantees FIFA revenues from Brazil 2000 that exceed the minimum set at CHF 60 million. Traffic will work in co-operation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for the sale of the European broadcast rights.

Five of the eight teams to compete in Brazil have already been confirmed: Al-Nasr (Saudi Arabia), Corinthians (Brazil), Manchester United (England), Real Madrid (Spain) and Vasco da Gama (Brazil). The representatives from the other confederations (Africa, North and Central America and the Caribbean, and Oceania) will be known in October. The draw to determine the composition of the two groups of four teams will be held in Rio de Janeiro on 14 October. The matches will be played in the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro and the Morumbi stadium in São Paulo.
