March 21 - Porto and Valencia clinch remaining quarterfinal spots in Champions
League
on Tuesday after Porto won 1-0 at Hertha Berlin and Valencia drew 0-0 at
home to European
champions Manchester United.
Porto advanced in Group A after Ferreira Cruz Clayton scored the winner in
Berlin after 69 minutes. That goal
ensured Porto finished second to Barcelona on 10 points.
Barcelona, who were already assured of their place in the
last eight, finished first on 16 points after winning 2-1 at
Sparta Prague.
Zdenek Svoboda put Sparta ahead after 18 minutes before
Gabri equalised for the visitors seven minutes into the second
half and then scored the winner a minute from time.
Valencia also qualified for the last eight after finishing
second to Manchester United in Group B.
After a lively first half in which Valencia hit the post,
the game petered out to a tame goalless draw after halftime with
a second half largely devoid of any incident.
In a match which became increasingly farcical as the minutes
ticked away, the two sides played out a draw which ensured
Valencia the point they needed to guarantee a place in the
quarter-finals of the top competition in Europe for the first
time.
Manchester United headed the group with 13 points followed
by Valencia on 10, Fiorentina on eight and Girondins Bordeaux on
two.
Fiorentina and 10-man Girondins Bordeaux drew 3-3.
The Italian side's goals came from Enrico Chiesa (47pen),
Gabriel Batistuta (61) and Rui Costa (64).
Sylvain Wilford (5), Marc Zanotti (87) and a last-gasp
equaliser by Laurent Batlles gave Bordeaux the draw.
Herve Alicarte was sent off a minute after halftime.
The second phase of the Champions League concludes on
Wednesday with the final matches in groups C and D.
With Bayern Munich already qualified from Group C and
Chelsea from group D, either Real Madrid or Dynamo Kiev will
advance from group C and either Lazio or Feyenoord will join
Chelsea in group D.
Dynamo Kiev play Bayern and already-eliminated Rosenborg
Trondheim face Real Madrid in group C, while eliminated
Olympique Marseille play Feyenoord and Chelsea take on Lazio in
Group D.
In Group C Dynamo Kiev face their old European nemesis Bayern Munich in a
decisive Champions League
game on Wednesday but their minds may wander to Norway, where Rosenborg host
Real Madrid.
The Ukrainian champions hope Rosenborg will keep Real from
taking three points, which could give Dynamo a quarter-final
place.
Dynamo and Real each have seven points from five matches but
the Spaniards have a better head-to-head record.
Bayern, already assured of winning the group with 13 points,
will have little incentive against Kiev, whom they beat in last
year's European Cup semifinal, other than pride and reputation.
The German champions managed only a 1-1 draw at Hertha
Berlin at the weekend and now lead second-placed Bayer
Leverkusen, who crushed SSV Ulm 9-1, on goal difference.
"Leverkusen have won a game and we have won an important
point," said coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who insists the domestic
title is just as important to Bayern as the Champions League.
Hitzfeld will be without Mehmet Scholl, who is suspended.
The Germany midfielder was fined by UEFA for taking his shirt
off in the match against Rosenborg so he would collect his third
yellow card and be suspended for the meaningless match in Kiev.
The Ukrainians, who are still missing injured fullbacks
Vladislav Vashchyuk and Yuri Dmitrulin and winger Vitaly
Kosovsky, welcome back Georgian midfielder Kakha Kaladze, who
sat out the Real game due to suspension.
Dynamo captain Olexander Holovko, rested in Saturday's
league derby against city rivals CSKA, should play his usual
role of cementing the back line.
Hitzfeld is expected to rest most of his first choice
players. Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, playmaker and captain Stefan
Effenberg and Brazilian striker Elber should all be left out.
Striker Alexander Zickler will wear the captain's armband.
Polish striker Slawomir Wojciechowski should play his first
match in Europe.
"Our goal is to win in Kiev," said Bayern defender Thomas
Linke. "If we don't, people will say we didn't care about the
match and that's not true. We want to win every match we play."
Probable teams:
Dynamo Kiev: 1-Olexander Shovkovsky; 3-Alexei Gerasimenko,
4-Olexander Holovko, 25-Ramiz Mamedov, 26-Andriy Nesmachny;
2-Alexander Khatskevich, 7-Kakha Kaladze, 8-Valentin Belkevich,
14-Andriy Husin; 11-Serhiy Rebrov, 27-Georgi Demetradze
Bayern Munich: 33-Stefan Wessels (or 22-Bernd Dreher);
25-Thomas Linke, 5-Patrik Andersson, 4-Samuel Kuffour,
18-Michael Tarnat; 6-Michael Wiesinger, 17-Thorsten Fink,
20-Hasan Salihamidzic; 15-Roque Santa Cruz, 21-Alexander
Zickler, 37-Slawomir Wojciechowski.

TRONDHEIM, Norway, March 21 (Reuters) - Real Madrid's
Fernando Morientes will miss the Champions League group C clash
with Rosenborg Trondheim due to a thigh injury, the club said on
Tuesday.
Morientes injured his right thigh in the club's last
training session before the match in which victory is imperative
if the seven-times European champions are to ensure their
progress to the quarter-finals.
The club said that the extent of the injury would be
determined when he got back to Madrid.
Club medical staff warned that if their fears are realised
it could be a muscle tear which would mean the Spanish
international striker will be out of action for at least three
weeks, including Spain's friendly international against Italy on
March 29.
Morientes' injury means that Real Madrid coach Vicente Del
Bosque is forced to change his forward line.
He is expected to bring in either Juan Antonio Meca or David
Aganzo, who were both playing for the reserves only a few months
ago.
