Hosted scholars, coaches, administrators from overseas to the Department of Physical Education
and Recreational Sports. Initiated and hosted Pacific Rim Academic Symposiums and Certification
Program in collaboration with the Seoul National University and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Director, UC Martial Arts Program

1969 - 2005

UC Berkeley won all but four (out of thirty) National Collegiate Taekwondo
Championship Team Titles and trained national, world and Olympic taekwondo athletes.

Hosted local, regional, national and world taekwondo and other martial arts tournaments
(over 100) including 7th FISU World University Taekwondo Championships.

Hosted visiting taekwondo, judo and other martial arts teams’ visits to US and Berkeley
campus; hosted local, regional, national and international academic symposiums until
program was expanded and delegated to the IMARI in 2002.

Faculty, Physical Education Department

1969 - 2001

Taught primarily martial arts related classes, including taekwondo, as a fulltime tenured
faculty; served as Martial Arts Program Coordinator and remain as Faculty Emeritus,
Physical Education Program
.

Sports Administrative and Professional Experience  as a Volunteer -Taekwondo and USOC

US National Collegiate Taekwondo Association - Founded the NCTA and served as
president, 1970-1972; 1979-1986; organized the national championship, selected national  team members
to the world university taekwondo championships. Participated in all world university championships. Hosted
four national collegiate championships, the latest in 2004.


United States Taekwondo Governing Body -
I spearheaded the founding of the official
taekwondo national organization of the AAU of USA and served as its first and second  term president.
Served as was editor of its taekwondo quarterly publication and Chairman of the  Instructor Certification
Committee. Successfully organized the 3rd World Taekwondo  Championship, Chicago, Illinois,1977.
Served as US Team Manager and Adviser for the  US National Taekwondo Team including the Barcelona
Olympics. A Senior Advisory  Board Member and Chairman, Hall of Fame Committee of the US
Grandmasters Society.

Pan Am Taekwondo Union - Spearheaded the founding Pan Am Taekwondo Union and  served as
Secretary General, Technical Director and briefly as president. Organized five  North American
Championships and two Pan Am Taekwondo Championships.

World Taekwondo Federation – I participated in all world taekwondo championships, and was an
official delegate from the USA to the 1st Organizing Assembly of the World  Taekwondo Federation in
1973. Served as Member of the International Evaluation  Committee, Seoul Olympics, 1988. Served as
Public Relations Committee member, Chairman of the University Committee, 1979-2005. Currently
serving as Chairman,  Legislative Committee and Executive Committee Member.

USOC  Served as Acting Executive Committee Member, Educational Council Member,  and member
of Games Preparation and Service Committee. As a member of the  Education Committee, we
recommended all aspects of educational program development  and selection of delegates to the IOA
(International Olympic Academy). As a member of  the Games Preparation and Service Committee,
we mandated policy of the team selection  process, training and participation in the Pan Am and Olympic
Games.

FISU -   World University Sports Federation  Spearheaded the recognition of  taekwondo as an official
sports program in FISU; served as Taekwondo Technical  Commissioner of FISU from the 2nd FISU
World Championship; Technical Supervisor of eight world university taekwondo championships and two
Summer Universiades - Daegu,  Korea ; Izmir, Turkey; Valencia Spain, 2006; Bangkok, Thailand, 2007.

Publications and Papers Presented - Presented approximately 500 lectures throughout  career in
martial arts and sports related topics at local, regional, national and international  conventions and
universities including the 1991 AAHPERD Convention, 1994 Centennial Olympic Congress, Paris,
France; the Korean Cultural Foundation, Seoul,  Korea, 1997. Published Taekwondo Instructors
Handbook, FISU Taekwondo Handbook,  College Taekwondo and Other Martial Arts Handbook,
UC Martial Arts Monograph, US  Taekwondo Journal; articles published in numerous national and
international martial arts  magazine and physical education publications of JOHPERD, QWEST,
USOC Academy  and Koreana.

Taekwondo Training

9th degree black belt from Kukkiwon, 1991; taught taekwondo in four universities and  colleges since
1963; retired International Referee; Certified International Instructor; 4-times Taekwondo Coach of Year
recipient from US National Collegiate Taekwondo  Coaches Association. Chairman of Arbitration Board
for World University  Championship (8) and Summer Universiade (2).
