Howard, Mathis Called To U.S. Squad for Upcoming Honduras, Ecuador International Games
Secaucus, NJ (February 20, 2002) - MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard and forward/midfielder Clint Mathis were each called to the U.S. National Team today for upcoming internationals against Honduras in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, March 3 (4:00 p.m. ET, ESPN-TV) and Ecuador in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, March 10 (4:00 p.m. ET, ABC-TV).
Mathis and Howard were among 17 players from the 20-man roster who play for Major League Soccer clubs, including midfielder Cobi Jones (Los Angeles), defender Eddie Pope (DC United), forward Brian McBride (Columbus), defender Jeff Agoos (San Jose), and midfielder Chris Armas (Chicago).
U.S. National Team coach Bruce Arena also called in three players from clubs in England such as defender Gregg Berhalter (Crystal Palace), goalkeeper Kasey Keller (Tottenham Hotspurs), and midfielder Eddie Lewis (Fulham).
The game against Honduras will mark the debut of the new 2002 World Cup jerseys that Nike has produced for the U.S. Men's National Team.
The U.S. National Team will make an appearance at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Thursday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET when they face CONCACAF rival Jamaica.
