MetroStars Waive Mohammad
Khakpour
Secaucus, NJ (Monday March 6, 2000) - The MetroStars
waived defender Mohammad Khakpour, it was announced today by general manager
Nick Sakiewicz.
"Khakpour filled in admirably in the back for our club last season," said Sakiewicz. "With the addition of Lothar this season, we feel we have significantly upgraded our backfield, and this necessary move is part of managing our salary cap situation."
"We are determined to put an improved team out on the field this season. We upgraded our club up front with the additions of Valencia and Comas. Now, with the expected arrival of Lothar later this week, and the additions of Dooley and Shak, we have strengthened our club across the back."
"It is with great sadness that I am forced to make this move. Mohammad is a professional and a true competitor," said head coach Octavio Zambrano. "Unfortunately, due to the realities of the salary cap, we were unable to absorb his salary."
Mohammad, a defensive specialist, started the final 14 games of the '99 season. He registered his only assist of the season on a goal by Henry Zambrano back on 9/12/99, a 2-1 win over Columbus.
