Secaucus, NJ (Wednesday, March 8, 2000)- The MetroStars of Major League Soccer announced today the commencement of the clubs new Kicks For Kids program. The program, through the generosity of local corporations, will bestow upon underprivileged kids the chance to experience the excitement of live professional soccer at the friendly confines of Giants Stadium.
Corporations who sign-on to actively take part in the program participate in a number of benefits such as announcements over the PA and in game programs, scoreboard recognition, banners in the stadium and tickets to distribute to their favorite charities.
Nick Sakiewicz, the Metros general manager, knows first-hand how valuable this program can be to the future soccer stars of tomorrow. Sakiewicz, who served as general manager and president for the Tampa Bay Mutiny for three seasons, instituted this program in Florida and witnessed success on all levels.
All of us in the professional sports business have an obligation to the children not only as role models but as responsible businesses that give back to the community. In Tampa, we began this program prior to the 1997 season, and it was a big success both on and off the field. Thanks to the generosity of numerous corporations the kids experienced an unforgettable memory. In less than two seasons, local corporations and the Mutiny teamed up to sponsor over 60,000 youths that otherwise would be unable to attend a professional sporting event like Major League Soccer.
With the growing number of youngsters playing soccer throughout the tri-state area, the Metros realize the impact this kind of program can have.
The number of kids playing soccer in the New York and New Jersey area is one of the highest in the country. Our organization is looking forward to the opportunity of showcasing the highest level of professional soccer in the United States, while at the same time positively affecting children who may not be able to otherwise enjoy the thrills of a professional sporting event.
