MetroStars Set Roster For Upcoming 2001 Season
SECAUCUS, NJ (March 26, 2001) - The MetroStars today waived goalkeeper Russell Payne, forward O'Neil Peart, and midfielders Tony Soto and Kerwin Jemmott in order to get to the league mandated 18-man roster for the upcoming 2001 MLS season.
New additions to the 2001 roster include Nike Pro 40 forward Martin Klinger (roster exempt), 2001 draft pick (#13 overall) Rodrigo Faria (transitional international), and Colombian midfielder Pedro Alvarez (senior international).

Familiar faces return on defense with Mike Petke, Steve Jolley, and Daniel Hernandez joined by Mark Semioli, Steve Shak, and Orlando Perez.Alvarez, Tab Ramos, Mark Chung, Richie Williams, Billy Walsh, and Petter Villegas head the experienced midfield cast, while up front, the MetroStars feature one of the best striking combinations in Major League Soccer with Adolfo Valencia, Alex Comas, and Clint Mathis.
The three strikers combined for 42 goals last season, surpassing the 32 goals scored by the entire MetroStars team in all of 1999.
The MetroStars open the 2001 MLS season on Saturday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m., hosting the New England Revolution at Giants Stadium.
