EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (MAY 12, 2001) - Clint Mathis notched a goal and an assist to lead the MetroStars to a 2-0 victory tonight over the Los Angeles Galaxy at Giants Stadium before a crowd of 21,561.

The win is the MetroStars fourth in a row and improves their record to a league-best 5-1-1, with a three-point lead over the Miami Fusion for first place in the Eastern Division Standings.

Clint Mathis set up the first score of the evening on a free kick from thirty yards in the 53rd minute. The curling shot hit the right post and rebounded to an open Petter Villegas for the easy put in past Kevin Hartman for a 1-0 lead. The goal extended Mathis' MLS point streak to six games with an assist on the play.

Mathis put the game away in the 77th minute on a pretty feed from Pedro Alvarez, who picked up his first MLS assist. Alvarez intercepted a pass at midfield from Danny Pena, and immediately fed Mathis inside the box for a shot from the penalty area for the 2-0 lead.

Tim Howard, who recorded five saves, picked up his first shutout of the season. He now leads the MLS in wins with five through the first seven games of the season.

The MetroStars will conclude their longest home stand in team history (six games), when they face the Colorado Rapids at Giants Stadium Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. ET
