MetroStars Tie Revolution, 1-1

Metros Move into Tie for Eastern Conference Lead; Cornell Glen Notches Third Goal of Year

FOXBOROUGH, MA (Saturday, May 22, 2004) – Despite an early tally by New England’s Pat Noonan, the visiting MetroStars came away with a point thanks to Cornell Glen's second-half equalizer in a 1-1 tie at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.

It took only seven minutes for the home side to get on the board as the Revolution finished their first chance of the game. Joey Franchino whipped in a dangerous cross from the left flank, which Joseph got to with a sliding attempt in the penalty area. Metros defender Eddie Pope blocked his effort, but Noonan was on hand to calmly put away the rebound from inside the area.

The Revs narrowly missed widening the gap in the 13th minute following some fancy footwork by striker Taylor Twellman. His dribbling effort hit a dead end, but he was able to poke the ball back to Jose Cancela, who attempted to float the ball into the upper right corner, but MetroStars goalkeeper Johnny Walker tipped the effort over the crossbar.

Striker Fabian Taylor had the best chance for the MetroStars in the first half when he got free for a header of a Joselito Vaca cross at the half-hour mark. The Jamaican international saw his effort blocked by a well-organized Revolution defense, which lined from the start of the match in a 3-5-2 scheme for the first time this season, including new signing Avery John alongside Brian Kamler in the new-look back three.

Ten minutes after the break, the MetroStars evened the contest. Mark Lisi threaded a beautiful ball through the Revolution defense and into the path of Glen, who scored his third goal of the season when he raced toward the goal all alone, and then calmly slipped the ball underneath Revolution 'keeper Matt Reis.

Cancela almost put the Revs back on top within two minutes of the MetroStars goal. Ralston crossed the ball in from the right flank and Noonan cleverly played a dummy for Cancela. But the woodwork saved the MetroStars, as his powerful drive smashed off Walker's right post.

Twellman had a fantastic opportunity to end his goalless streak and put his team in the lead when he found himself one-on-one with Walker after a nicely played through-ball. Twellman fired a low shot, and Walker was able to make an acrobatic save to block the shot.

The MetroStars made many offensive surges over the last ten minutes with substitute forwards Mike Magee and John Wolyniec both moving forward with the ball.
