Late KC Goal Downs MetroStars, 1-0
KANSAS CITY, MO (May 24, 2001) - A late goal 15 seconds from time by newly allocated striker Onandi Lowe gave the Wizards a 1-0 victory tonight before a crowd of 7,783 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
Lowe, a prominent Jamaican International who joined the Wizards on Wednesday, slammed home the winning goal with his left foot just in front of the six-yard line after receiving a Chris Klein cross from the right flank.
The MetroStars took 8 total shots in the game, but were unable to find the back of the net against New Jersey native Tony Meola (4 saves). The Wizards attempted 20 shots in the game.
The best Metro scoring opportunity came in the 68th minute when Richie Williams send a lob just inside the six-yard box to a crossing Comas, but the Colombian's header missed to the left of the goal.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard recorded six saves, but saw his third shoutout in four games vanish with Lowe's late goal.
The MetroStars road record in 2001 now drops to 0-2-1.
Mike Petke set the club record tonight with his 92nd appearance in a MetroStars uniform. Petke, 25, now needs only 262 minutes to break the current team record of minutes played by Tony Meola (8,100).
The MetroStars will face UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich Saturday
night at Giants Stadium at 7:00 p.m. ET.
