MetroStars Drop 2-1 Thriller to the Kansas City Wizards
Mike Magee Scores Third of 2003; “Red and Black” Remain in First in the East

KANSAS CITY, MO (Saturday, June 7, 2003) – The Kansas City Wizards ended the MetroStars seven-game unbeaten streak and five-game winning streak, taking a 2-1 result Saturday night at Arrowhead Stadium which left the two teams both atop their respective conferences and tied for the best record in MLS, each with 17 points.

Davy Arnaud opened the scoring for the Wizards (4-1-5) on 11 minutes, but the Mike Magee answered the home side's tally just six minutes later for the MetroStars (5-2-2). But Josh Wolff put the Wizards back in front a mere 11 minutes later with what proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Arnaud, who was making his first career MLS start on the right side of midfield in place of Chris Klein, away on national team duty with the USA, set up the first goal on his own early in a wild first half. He dribbled towards the top of the MetroStars area and unleashed a left-footed shot from some 20 yards, which hit the underside of the crossbar, and dropped in behind goalkeeper Tim Howard. The goal was also Arnaud's first in MLS.

But in the 17th minute, MetroStars midfielder Richie Williams picked up a loose ball in the Kansas City defense and sent in a lofted cross, finding a wide-open Mike Magee in the front of the net. The young striker settled the ball with his chest and slotted home past a helpless Tony Meola to tie the score.

Yet just 11 minutes later Kansas City again went ahead. Igor Simutenkov slipped a well timed through-ball into the right side of the Metros' box to an onrushing Josh Wolff. The U.S. international fired a right-footed shot past Howard from close range to put the Wizards up 2-1, his first goal of the season.

Kansas City controlled much of the second half, not letting the MetroStars develop many quality scoring chances. In the 74th minute, Kansas City nearly added to their lead, when Wolff led Eric Quill into the box along the left wing. Quill centered a pass across the face of goal which eventually found Chris Brown, MetroStars defender Steve Jolley clearing it off the line.

Yet Mathis nearly extended his goal scoring streak to six games, and again brought the Metros level, when Amado Guevara's pinpoint pass found the U.S. international streaking behind the Wizards defense. But his angled blast came straight back off the near post with Meola beaten.

The two teams return to action next Saturday, June 14, as the MetroStars will meet the Chicago Fire at Giants Stadium at 4 p.m. ET (ESPN2). The Kansas City Wizards will travel to The Home Depot Center in Carson, California to face the Los Angeles Galaxy at 7 p.m. PT.
