MetroStars, Earthquakes Play To Scoreless Tie

East Rutherford, NJ (June 16, 2001) - The MetroStars and the San Jose Earthquakes played to a scoreless tie at Giants Stadium Saturday night before a crowd of 23, 561, extending the MetroStars record to 6-4-3 with the next five league games on the road.

Tim Howard notched five saves and picked up his third shutout of the season, while his counterpart Joe Canon made four saves for his fourth shutout.

The MetroStars outshot San Jose, 14-11, but could not find the back of the goal as the MetroStars remain 11 points behind Miami in Eastern Conference standings after the Fusion played to a 3-3 draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy in Lockhart Stadium.

The MetroStars had several opportunities to score, most notably in the 17th minute when captain Tab Ramos fired a hard shot from the top of the box, but Canon was well positioned to make the save. Adolfo Valencia, off a great feed from rookie Rodrigo Faria, came close in the 35th minute, but his shot hit the side of the netting to keep the game scoreless.

San Jose had their chances to take the lead and almost did in the 37th minute, but Canadian striker Dwayne DeRosario's bicycle kick found the arms of Tim Howard.

Both clubs played a 10-minute overtime period, but neither team could record a score as the MetroStars recorded their third tie this season.

MetroStars defender Mike Petke set the team all-time record for minutes played when he surpassed goalkeeper Tony Meola record of 8,100 in the 73rd minute. Petke, 25, has now played 8,127 minutes.
