The Metros are now 7-0 this season when they score two or more goals in a contest. With the victory, the Metros have now tied their win total for all of 1999 (7) with 18 games still remaining.
Tempers between the two heated Eastern Division rivals flared early in the match when the Revolutions Leonel Alvarez was shown a yellow caution card in the 6th minute of play for striking Metros midfielder Tab Ramos in the back of the head. The Metros used the intensity to their advantage, taking the early 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on Billy Walshs first goal of the season. Thomas Dooley won possession in the midfield, played the ball ahead to Clint Mathis who one-timed a feed to Walsh. Walsh made two touches on the ball before blasting home the goal to the upper right side of Revs keeper Jeff Causey from about 35 yards out.
Controversy continued in the 23rd minute when the Revolution were awarded a penalty kick by referee Ricardo Valenzuela. Metros midfielder Mark Chung was called for bringing down the Revs Joey Franchino just inside the Metros box. Revolution midfielder Imad Baba converted the kick in the 24th minute to the lower right side of Metros keeper Mike Ammann.
The Revolution took a 2-1 lead in the 29th minute a goal by forward Wolde Harris. Harris capitalized on netting home his team-leading sixth goal of the season after the Revolution bombarded Ammann with several shots from point-blank range. Following three impressive saves by Ammann, the ball bounded to a wide-open Harris at the near side of the box who slid the ball under a diving Ammann from eight yards out.
The Metros got the equalizer in the 41st minute on Adolfo El Tren Valencias team-leading eighth goal of the season. Valencia, who received the ball from Mike Petke, made several touches on the ball en route to beating two Revolution defenders. Valencia finished the play by blasting the ball under a sprawling Causey from nine yards out. The Metros took the lead only two minutes later on Steve Shaks first career MLS goal. Metros midfielder Mark Chung moved down the far flank and took a booming shot that struck the crossbar and bounded to a wide-open Shak at the top of the Revs box. Shak proceeded to one-time a bending shot that beat Causey to the short side.
The Metros stretched their lead to 4-2 just four minutes into the second half on Clint Mathiss sixth goal of the season. Mathis, who now has three goals and four assists in five games since joining the Metros, perfectly placed a free-kick over the top of the Revolution wall from 25 yards out. Mathis surprised Causey with a quick-kick that beat Causey that founds its way just inside the left post.
