Kreis Burns The MetroStars, 2-0
Dallas, TX (Thursday, July 4, 2002) Bobby Rhine and Jason Kreis each
scored a goal to give the Dallas Burn a 2-0 victory over the MetroStars at
the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas Thursday night.
The loss is the second against the Burn this season, and drops the MetroStars record to 6-7-2.
The Dallas Burn made the most of their chances to score two goals and beat us tonight, said MetroStars head coach Octavio Zambrano. It hurt not to have Diallo available and to miss a penalty kick, but we have to quickly recover and get ready for Columbus in less than 48 hours.
The MetroStars failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities in the game, especially in the 48th minute when Burn goalkeeper Matt Jordan went to his left to stop a Rodrigo Faria penalty kick. The penalty kick was awarded after a hard foul by Joselito Vaca brought down Ted Chronopoulos inside the box, leading to a yellow card and penalty call by referee Ali Saheli.
The MetroStars had further scoring opportunities during the second half, but could not convert with Brad Davis hitting the right post on a free kick and Faria and Steve Jolley headers missing by inches against Jordan.
The Burn were on the board in the 38th minute when Oscar Pareja sent a pass deep into the box to Jason Kreis, who then immediately turned to send a pass across the penalty spot to Rhine who slotted home the goal past Tim Howard.
Kries, who now holds career totals of 10 goals and six assists for 26 points in 16 career MLS games against the MetroStars, put the game away in the 83rd minute when he managed to go right down the field and fight through several white jerseys to force home a goal past Tim Howard that hit the left post first and then rolled in for a goal.
The two goals against Howard were the most he has allowed in his last six games, dating back to a 4-2 loss at DC United on May 18, 2002. The MetroStars also drop to 2-6-1 when opponents score first.
The MetroStars conclude a three-game road swing with a trip to Columbus in the Soccer Saturday Game of the Week (ESPN2 at 4:00 p.m. ET).
