MetroStars Burned In Dallas, 3-0

DALLAS, TEXAS (Saturday, August 11) - The Burn defeated the MetroStars in a Major League Soccer match Saturday night, 3-0, at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.

The loss drops the MetroStars record to 10-8-3 with seven regular season games remaining on the schedule.

"We did not put away our chances early and Dallas did to enable them to build a 2-0 lead one-man up in the first half," said MetroStars midfielder Tab Ramos, who recorded his first start since June 30 at Chicago. "It was an uphill battle from there, and we failed to get that one goal we needed to get back into the game. When they scored the third goal, it was over."

The Burn opened the scoring in the 25' when Antonio Martinez took a feed down the left flank from Chad Deering. Martinez eventually sent a lateral pass to a trailing Joselito Vaca, who met the ball untouched inside the box to beat Howard with a right-footed shot from 12-yards for the 1-0 lead.

The Burn stretched the lead to two, nine minutes later. Martinez, this time on a corner kick, played a give-and-go with Oscar Pareja, and sent a cross on the return pass to Jason Kreis for the strong header and 2-0 lead.

The MetroStars rough first half continued in the 35' when Adolfo Valencia left game with a strained right hamstring. Four minutes later, defender Mike Petke picked up his second yellow after referee Rich Grady whistled the defender for a tackle on Bobby Rhine at midfield in front of the MetroStars bench.

Petke's ejection left the Metros with 10-man for the remainder of the game.

Ross Paule recorded his Metro debut in the 58', replacing Richie Williams. The newly acquired midfielder came close to scoring four minutes later from the top of the penalty arc on a pass from Petter Villegas, but Burn goalkeeper Matt Jordan dived to his right to record the save.

The Burn scored their final goal in the 74' on a wonderful run by 17-year old striker Eddie Johnson. He took Martinez's pass from the center circle to beat Tim Howard one-on-one from about 13-yards for 3-0 lead.

Antonio Martinez set the Burn record on Johnson's goal with three assists in one game.

The loss drops the MetroStars 11-points behind the Miami Fusion in the Eastern Division standings. Miami defeated the New England Revolution in Foxboro, 4-1.

The MetroStars return to action Wednesday night against DC United at RFK Stadium in a game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (Fox Sports Net, Radio Unica 1660 AM New York).
