PELE HEADS LIST OF PLAYERS RETURNING FOR METROSTARS NASL REUNION WEEKEND AT GIANTS STADIUM ON SATURDAY, APRIL 21
SECAUCUS, NJ (March 26, 2001) - Soccer legend Pele, perhaps the greatest and most popular player in the sports history and the man who put America on the world soccer map when he joined the North American Soccer League (NASL) in the mid-1970s, heads the list of players who will return to Giants Stadium on Saturday, April 21st when the MetroStars host the Tampa Bay Mutiny during NASL Reunion Weekend.
Also confirmed to participate in the festivities, which will be held prior to the 3:30 p.m. kick-off, are former NASL stars Carlos Alberto, the great Brazilian sweeper; Teofilo Nene Cubillas (Fort Lauderdale Strikers), and a group of players that are sure to be familiar to New York-area soccer fans--Werner Roth, Shep Messing, Hubert Birkenmeier and Eskandarian.
This will be the first time any of these players will be on the Giants Stadium field since at least 1984, when the NASL ceased operations. Other participating NASL stars will be announced continually during the coming weeks.
As part of the celebration, both the MetroStars and the Mutiny will play in NASL retro-style uniforms for the game.
Peles participation in the NASL Reunion Weekend was organized through the Pan-American Sports Network (PSN). Soccer fans in the U.S. will get to see Pele exclusively on PSN when the 24-hour all-sports Spanish language cable network launches in the U.S. this year.
On his PSN program, Pele will offer commentary on major soccer developments, interview special guests and look back on his storied career. Pele will also make occasional guest appearances on PSN telecasts of important soccer championships.
