MetroStars.com Preseason Training Report 04.03.03

MetroStars training was held from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. today at Giants Stadium on the new FieldTurf playing surface. Training was originally scheduled for the bubble at the stadium, but the new surface was available to be utilized by the team.

The training session was the first activity on the stadium’s new field after a brief unveiling ceremony was conducted at noon by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA). The FieldTurf replaces a tray system grass surface, which was installed for three years.

The team began practice by getting acquainted with the new playing surface. Several of the players worked with the ball on the grass, ran some quick sprints and tested the way the ball bounced on the field. Positive comments were heard by all members of the team who have been waiting a long time to step foot on this state-of-the-art surface.

Once the players were adjusted to the new surroundings, coach Bradley led the team warm up with jogging stretching. The keepers then separated from the group for training while the rest of the team played a full-sided possession game. Bradley actively participated in the game and gave instruction as he interacted with individual players.

The team then took an extended break for water and a team meeting before starting up again with a full-field scrimmage.

The uniform practice ended with a group cool down and stretching. Many of the players stayed behind for a significant amount of time today to get more acquainted with their new home turf. The overall consensus from the team was that they feel as if they truly have a home field advantage and are excited for the fans to see the difference that this field makes from a spectator's point of view.

The first opportunity for fans to see the new look of the stadium comes this Sunday, April 6 when the MetroStars face the Rochester Raging Rhinos in their final preseason exhibition match before the home opener on April 12th. This match is open to MetroMembers only.
