MetroStars Down Boavista, 3-1

John Wolyniec Scores Two Goals; MetroStars Win First International Friendly of 2004

Elizabeth, NJ (Wednesday, 26, 2004) – The MetroStars defeated Boavista F.C. of the Portuguese Super League by a score of 3-1 tonight at Williams Field in Elizabeth, NJ. Bob Bradley’s squad had a new look with several players making their debut in a “Red and Black” uniform. John Wolyniec, serving as the team’s captain, had two goals and an assist in the MetroStars first International Friendly victory in 2004.

The Metros first chance came in the 5th minute when Eddie Gaven made a strong run with the ball down the left side. He threaded a pass to Sergio Galvan Rey, who slid it out to the top of the 18-yard box to John Wolyniec. Wolyniec collected the pass, and fired a shot that just sailed over the goal.

The MetroStars kept the pressure on Boavista in the 15th minute when Gaven had the team’s second great scoring opportunity. Wolyniec broke free of the defense, and sent a pass to the top of the 18-yard box that found Gaven, who controlled the ball, and rocketed a shot that just missed the upper-right corner of the goal.

Boavista’s first scoring opportunity came in the 20th minute. Ricardo Sousa had a threatening cross to Joao Paulo, however Metros defender Tenywa Bonseu was able to break up the play before just before a shot could be fired.

The Metros first shot on goal came in the 21st minute, when Tim Regan sent a through ball to Sergio Galvan Rey. Galvan Rey blasted a shot at point blank range that the Boavista ‘keeper Khadin saved.

The Metros opened the second half with an offensive surge that paid off in the 47th minute. Wolyniec dribbled the ball in to the 6- yard line and fired a shot that was blocked by a group of defenders. A scrum ensued on the ball, and Galvan Rey pounced on the ball and flicked a shot past their ‘keeper to put the “Red and Black on the board first.

Boavista pulled even at 1-1, in the 53rd minute on a penalty kick, which was set up when Isidro dribbled the ball into the box but was yanked down by Metros defender Seth Stammler. Ricardo Sousa elected to take the shot, and fired a low ball to the left, which proved to be a bit too much for Metros rookie ‘keeper Zach Wells.

The “Red and Black” answered back in the 59th minute. Wolyniec carried the ball to the top of the 18-yard line, stopped, spinned to his left, and blasted a shot that Khadim had no chance on putting the Metros ahead once again.

The MetroStars closed out the scoring in the 85th minute. Brazilian midfielder Gilberto, making his debut in a Metros uniform, made a strong run with the ball down the right flank. He threaded a pass to a streaking Mike Magee who headed the ball from the 6-yard box. The shot deflected off the crossbar, but Wolyniec was waiting on the doorstep, and fired the rebound in the goal for his second tally of the night.
