MetroStars Defeat Mid Michigan Bucks, 4-0
Berkley, MI (Wednesday, July 16, 2003) The MetroStars defeated the Mid Michigan Bucks tonight 4-0, at Hurley Field in front of 4,010 fans in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The MetroStars received goals from Amado Guevara, John Wolyniec, Mike Nugent and José Galván in the victory.
Mark Lisi started the offensive efforts for the MetroStars as he served a ball to forward John Wolyniec, who was fouled just outside the 18-yard box, setting up a free kick. The MetroStars took advantage of this opportunity, as Guevara curled the freekick around the Bucks wall and into the net, putting the MetroStars ahead, 1-0, in just the fifth minute of the contest.
Mychal Turpin provided the first offensive threat for the Bucks as he broke free of the defense and dribbled into the 18-yard box in the 26th minute. MetroStars Goalkeeper Jonny Walker charged off his line however, and was able to make a sprawling save on Turpins low shot.
Tonight marked the MetroStars debut for Walker, who is a recent MetroStars acquisition. Walker played the full 90 minutes, facing four shots, and saving all of them in recording a shutout in his first match with the club.
John Wolyniec and Mike Magee had the first offensive chances for the MetroStars in the second half. Wolyniec broke free of the defense and fired a low shot, which forced Bucks Goalkeeper Peter Dzubay to make a lunging save in the 68th minute. Just two minutes later Magee fired a shot that forced Dzubay to make another diving save.
In the 75th minute Walker and the Metros were challenged again when Kevin Taylor headed a corner kick towards the far post. Walked, forced to dive, was able to deflect the ball out of danger just inches from the goal line.
The MetroStars received some breathing room in the 83rd minute, when Wolyniec took a cross from Edgar Bartolomeu, safely chested the ball to his feet, and fired a shot past Dzubay to put the MetroStars ahead, 2-0.
The scoring didnt stop there however for the MetroStars, as on his first touch in the game forward Mike Nugent took a perfectly played cross in the 87th minute from Mark Lisi, and blasted a shot by Dzubay to put the MetroStars ahead, 3-0.
Just one minute later, in the 88th minute, the Metros scoring barrage continued as they received their last piece of security when José Galván collected a loose ball, dribbled into the 18-yard box, and ripped shot that beat Dzubay and put the MetroStars up, 4-0.
The MetroStars return to MLS action this Saturday, July 19th when they battle the Dallas Burn at 9:00 p.m. ET (MSG, WADO 1280 AM). The Metros will next be in U.S. Open Cup action on August 6th when the face the Columbus Crew at a time and venue to be determined.
