U.S. Men Advance to Gold Cup Quarterfinals with 1-0 Win over Cuba

PASADENA, Calif. (Monday, January 21, 2002) - The U.S. Men's National Team clinched first place in Group B and a spot in the 2002 Gold Cup quarterfinals today as they edged Cuba, 1-0. Brian McBride scored the game's only goal, converting a penalty kick in the 23rd minute. DaMarcus Beasley, the hero in Saturday's dramatic win over Korea, again played a large part in the U.S. scoreline drawing the foul to set up McBride's opportunity. The U.S. remains a perfect 14-0-0 in Gold Cup group play, dating back to the tournament's inception in 1991. They will face the second place team from Group A, which includes Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala, in the quarterfinals on Sunday, January 27, at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT.
