COSTA RICA 2 : 5 BRAZIL
Brazil finish top of Group C with a maximum nine points as they put paid
to Costa Rica at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Korea. The Central Americans
will not advance to the second round, as they end with the same number of
points as Turkey, who downed China 3-0 to finish with a better goal difference.
Costa Rica became the first CONCACAF side to suffer defeat at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan. An early Luis Marin own-goal put Costa Rica in the hole, and though they stayed in the match thanks to goals by Paulo Wanchope and Ronald Gomez, their need to attack left them vulnerable in back, and Brazil took advantage with goals from Ronaldo, Edmilson, Rivaldo, and Junior.
