Kobe City faces Osaka bay east of Hyogo prefecture. This area is in the cnter of the Hanshin Industrial Zone, with it's concentration of steel and machinery industries. Since the Kobe port opened it's doors to international trade in 1968, it has been contrivuting greatly to the growth of the Japanese economy. The centre of Kobe City is around the Sannomiya Station area , and it is an important traaffic point for railways and buses for the prefecture as well as for the Kensai region. Underground shopping ziones abound in this area. It has a Chinatown district known as "Nankin-machi" and various entertainmemt facilities including Rokko Port Island
