Facing the Japan of Sea, Niigata prefecture is located about 300 km northeast of Tokyo. Niigata is known as the nation's top producer of rice, cut tul;ips, and pears, and a leading source of  "sake" (ricewine), watermelons and radishes.  And also , distinctve industries - food processing, and clothes such as sweaters, and the manufacturing of metal western tableware - contribute greatly to the area's economy. Due to it's location near the Japan's longest river, the Shinano, Niigata City has been flourishing as a trading port along the Japan Sea for a long time, serving as the centre of  commerce and transportation.
