The WUSA made history in 2001 with the launch of the first women`s professional
soccer league in the United States. Women`s World Cup Champions Mia Hamm,
Brandi Chastain, Briana Scurry, Kristine Lilly and Tiffeny Milbrett, along
with the best international players, competed in a premier league they could
call their own.
In 2002, it was the action and spectacular play that stole the headlines.
But the veteran stars and international greats weren`t the only ones dazzling
the fans. Number one draft pick Danielle Slaton took home the Defensive Player
of the Year award and number two pick Abby Wambach earned Rookie of the Year
honors.
